Simple Natural Solutions to Manage Spring and Summer Allergies

“What natural remedies have you got for allergies? Please give me something that works!” I had asked that question countless times and couldn’t find the answer anywhere, it seemed. Nothing over the counter could touch my allergies.

My whole life I struggled in the spring and summer months! I have lived in Draper, UT for nearly 25 yrs. and up until seven years ago, couldn’t enjoy being out on the many trails that Draper is so well known for because I needed respiratory support during these seasons. I had used over-the-counter products in the past, and if it had a adverse effect, I experienced it. I had to find more natural solutions! So I turned to herbs, homeopathics, and finally essential oils.

After receiving my first wholesale DoTERRA product order, I put a few drops of Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint oils in a gel cap and took it morning and night for two days. I didn’t need any additional support for three weeks and then I repeated it when the pollens and grasses were driving me crazy. I didn’t need any further support for the rest of the summer and my life was literally transformed! Could it possibly be so easy? Since that first spring and summer of 2010, I no longer consider myself held hostage by pollen counts! I use a drop of Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint oils on my tongue maybe three times a year OR I just put a drop of each in the palms of my hands, rub my hands together and breathe that combination of essential oils in and feel the itchy eyes and throat, the drippy nose and tight chest dissipate immediately OR add a few drops of each to the diffuser! Such an incredible blessing! I can now enjoy petting the neighbors cats and dogs now, breathing in the incredible aroma of flowers and flowering trees as I walk the trails of Draper, and going on countless walks and bike rides even when the grasses are almost as tall as I am.

When I was a young girl, my Mother gave me, my older brother and my Father allergy injections to desensitize us a little so we could better handle the spring and summer months with all its loveliness and pollens! I learned to drive when I was nine years old because I couldn’t help in the hay field or my eyes would swell shut and I struggled to get air in. I remember watching my Dad put Vicks VaporRub in his eyes…as the burn of the Vicks was far more tolerable than the terrible itching eyes and throat and the drippy nose.

Seven years ago, in April 2010, I found doTERRA after many years of searching for more information on essential oils. I knew it was an answer to prayer, as my previously experience with essential oils over nearly two decades was less than consistent. I saw Peggy Smith’s vendor table at a perinatal nursing conference and knew it was an answer to prayer and that I wanted everything on her table. I gave her my business card and asked her to please call me. When she called the following week, I told her I had always wanted to learn more about essential oils and asked how soon she could teach a class for me and how many people I needed to have present to make it worth her while! I called twenty two women to confirm eight in attendance and we barraged Peggy with questions for nearly three hours. It was time well spent and that was the beginning of an incredible healing journey!

Ever since that first experience in the spring of April 2010, I now carry sample bottles of many essential oils, including Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint oils to be ready for anything! The peace I now feel knowing that I have what I need when I need it is priceless! As a wellness advocate, I would love to guide you as well in managing your health and wellness concerns naturally! Why are essential oils so effective?

In my own experience, I knew the essential oils were effective, but I wasn’t sure why or how. I am the sort of person that needs to know the ‘why’. The more I used essential oils and had consistent therapeutic benefits, the more I wanted to know the ‘why’ behind why they were so effective!

Essential oils became much less confusing and more useable as soon as I learned more about their chemistry. I would be awakened in the night with a child and be prompted as to which essential oil I needed to reach for to support them in their healing journey. After administering to their needs, often I would retire to my bathroom where I kept one of my favorite essential oil resource guides. Opening the resource guide, I would search out more information on that particular essential oil or group of oils that I was prompted to reach for.

One of my healing gifts is the gift of intuition. I was able to recognize spiritual promptings in attending to the needs of my children…but I also desired to learn more about the oil I had been prompted to use and why it was effective. Eventually, I found myself studying the biochemistry and turning to my husband to better understand the chemistry since he was first a chemist and second a pharmacist. During my husband’s study of pharmacy, he had a class called pharmacognosy, which was the study chemical constituents found in plants that had therapeutic benefit. From that science stemmed pharmaceuticals. So why don’t we reach for more natural solutions? Our Creator has placed them here on Earth for our use! We just need to search them out.

Studying the biochemistry a bit certainy helped! Learning more about the chemistry can seem daunting which is why I love how Dr. Hill breaks it down for us in this article “How do chemical constituents in essential oils affect us?” (https://doterra.com/US/en/brochures-magazines-doterra-living-fall-2015-ask-dr-hill”). He gives an easy to understand explanation of the science behind how and why these drops can do so much for our wellness. “The chemical constituents of an essential oil are analogous to the macronutrients in food. Just as the fructose (sugar) composition of a banana provides instant energy and has specific metabolic effects, essential oils rich in Limonene can provide a powerful boost to your immune system. The chemical constituents in an oil determine its potential benefits, what metabolites it will produce, and best practices for application.” Chemists have identified more than 3000 different chemical constituents in essential oils. Familiarity with why these constituents are so effective helps any essential oil user use the products safely.

What other resources have you found that help you understand the ‘why’ behind your favorite oils?

Six questions to create lasting change

I was driving home from Arizona yesterday, the freeway message board read, “New Year, New You…Use your blinker!” It caused me to chuckle! I had left my Mother’s home talking to four quarreling boys about making some changes to strengthen our family in the coming year and reduce the contention in our home.

newEach year, many or us make goals or New Year’s Resolutions in hopes that we can create desired change. But what does it really take to make that happen? Will we fail to even remember our “goals” two weeks from now? Will it be like last year? Again? When all our “goals” were thwarted because “life happened”?

As I work with childbearing women that desire a natural birth…or a much different experience than their previous birth, OR work with those on my doTERRA team that desire to make a change in their health and wellness naturally OR desire to serve and bless others by sharing natural solutions, I often ask, “What do you want?” “Why do you want it?” “What are you willing to do to get what you want?”

1.) Are you ready? Is the timing right? There has to be a commitment! Are you committed? If you keep doing what you are doing, where will you be 6 months from now? Are you tired of doing (or not doing!) the same thing over and over while expecting different results?

2.) Are you willing make a change? What tells you so? There has to be a willingness and a desire! (And this goes much deeper than the surface.) What will reaching that goal or achieving the desired outcome give you? Give your family? What will it feel like? Why is that important to you?

3.) Do you believe it’s possible to create this change? On a scale of 1-10, what is your confidence level that you can change? That you can achieve what you desire? If that number is low, then we need to dig deeper into the emotions to raise that number so there is real motivation to progress.

4.) Are you fully committed? When life throws you down, do you have that “get back up” ability and drive? They say it doesn’t matter how many times you fail or fall as long as you get back up! Have you gotten back up when you fell short of your achievement before? Do you trust that you can do it again?

5.) Are you properly equipped with the education, the understanding, the tools, the skill set that you need OR do you know where to find it? Do you know what actions to take?

6.) Will you DO the daily work consistently, day after day after day until you get the results you are looking for and create a different habit? a different mindset? a new found confidence? Are you willing to stay and play until you achieve what you set out to do? If you know what you need to be doing to get the desired results, are you doing it? Are you doing enough of it? Are you getting the results you should be getting? If not, who might you turn to for mentoring?

In order to progress and improve, I have found it very helpful to reflect on the past year and decide what I wanted to change and what goals I desired to achieve. And in doing so, I have
untitled-design-29recognized, once again, that I cannot change anyone but myself. It’s possible that I might inspire another to change (and I sincerely hope I have done that) but I cannot change anyone! I am finding though that when I recognize the efforts of others, they are much more likely to continue striving to make changes. Taking time to quietly contemplate how important it was for me to reduce the contention in our home and why that was so important to me allowed me to look deep inside myself and come up with several behaviors that I was personally committed to changing. I shared the list I made with my boys and posted it on my bathroom mirror for me to read each day. I hope you will write your goals and post them for your constant review and reflection or ask another to be your accountability partner.

When does learning begin?

When Annie Murphy Paul’s TED talk came across my facebook feed, I immediately pulled it up to view. I stopped my world to see what she had to say. (https://www.ted.com/talks/annie_murphy_paul_what_we_learn_before_we_re_born?language=en#t-14002)
I was excited and curious to hear of more scientific proof of something I knew innately…that learning begins at conception. From the moment of conception, your baby is already taking in experiences that literally become a part of their internal wiring.
