How to stay healthy when everyone around you isn’t!

We all value that which we want and do not have! Health is one such state that we value most when we don’t have it. Perhaps some enjoy taking a sick day from time to time. I am not one of them! Personally, I think being sick is an utter waste of time and resources. So I like to stay healthy and I like to keep my family healthy as well! Making healthy choices is a big part of that. I don’t like putting chemical junk in and on my body.

My husband and I are in a most interesting time in our lives when we are raising teenage boys. I am learning that whatever I say carries very little weight, that I don’t know as much as I thought I did, that I grew up in the “olden days” and my ideas are outdated and I “need to get with the program!” I am learning that it’s more about what I am doing and less about what I am saying.

If I want to stay healthy, I have to work at it. I have to work at eating right. And, if I make protein balls for myself, or cut up a tray of veggies and am found munching on them, or purchase Dannon’s Oikos greek yogurt because it tastes great and has only 6 gm of sugar and 15 gm of protein…my boys are likely to partake right along with me.

I have to work at getting plenty of exercise and activity. Currently, I am working with a personal fitness trainer to help guide me in my specific fitness and strengthening goals while taking into consideration my gender, age, perimenopausal issues, previous injuries and personal limitations, weight goals, nutritional intake, etc. And, I have to make time to go to the gym!

I have to work at managing my stress and rest and sleep. That goal is a challenging one for me as I try to get more done in a day than there are hours! I crawled in bed after 1:00 a.m. this morning after doing some service late last night and actually gave myself the suggestion that every 20 min. would seem as one hour and my body would wake refreshed and energized! (I use a similar prompt with my birthing clients:-)) AND, I used some calming essential oils to help me fall asleep quickly.

I have to work at reducing toxic load…in other words, being mindful of what I put in and on my body and actually who I hang out with…as people can be toxic, too! I try and avoid or at least minimize my exposure to synthetics and chemicals. I also have to consider proactive health care. And, for me, I prefer having what I need at my fingertips so I can reach for it preventatively and immediately as needed. I would rather prevent than waste my time repairing and fixing and getting well.

And that’s precisely why I love doTERRA’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils. When I’m flying on an airplane and rebreathing everyone else’s air, I love using the On Guard products to boost my immune system. If I feel that my immune system is weakened, I love breathing a steaming cup of water with two drops each of Oregano, Melaleuca, Lemon and Peppermint essential oils for at least 15-20 min. and then drinking it when it’s cooled off. (The Oregano is a bit HOT…but it does the trick OR I do it every couple of hours until I feel that my body is nourished enough that it is doing its healing job better.) When I’m feeling stressed…and that knot is growing ever more intense in my belly…I love breathing in Balance or Peace or Serenity or Frankincense or Bergamot for a full minute to calm me down! It’s also a reminder that a time out is needed! Taking 15 min. to sit at the piano and play some beautiful music, or warm up in front of the fire on a cold winter day, or play a game of Fish with my 9 yr. old,  or choose something else from my “joy list” helps calm me down and helps me step back into my body as my authentic self.

Staying healthy is a lifestyle choice! And it takes effort every single day. Tuning in and listening to our body’s needs is most helpful. Nurturing our instincts if what I am all about! To schedule a wellness consult with me, click here!
