What is HypnoBirthing? And How can it make my labor and childbirth experience less painful?

So, what is HypnoBirthing?

I find myself dispelling a lot of myths and misconceptions about hypnosis in general when people wonder about HypnoBirthing.

“Will I be hypnotized?” “Hypnosis is against my religion.” “My husband doesn’t feel comfortable with hypnosis.” “My priest tells me hypnosis is of the devil.” “I don’t want anyone to have control of my mind.”

Perhaps I should start with answering, “What is hypnosis?” Hypnosis is simply deep relaxation coupled with visualization. So is it evil to deeply relax? If it is, deep REM sleep is evil. Is it evil to visualize? If it is, day dreaming and vision boards and the Law of Attraction are evil. Nonsense.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis! No one is taking control of your mind. You either choose to follow the given suggestions or you choose not to. You are totally in control. No one can be hypnotized against their will. And, furthermore, you will not do anything under hypnosis that is against your morals and values. So if you’ve seen anyone do really silly or stupid stuff under hypnosis, we’ll get to that in a minute.

Let me give you a couple examples. Have you ever driven home from work thinking about all that you have going later that evening, maybe you have a date and you’re thinking about what you are going to wear, about the movie you plan on seeing, if you should get concessions or not, maybe imagining what your date will be wearing, etc. Suddenly, you arrive home and think, “Oh. I’m already home.” Even though you have little recollection of actually having made the drive. You see, you were running on “autopilot”! And you’ve driven that route so many times in the past, it takes little conscious thought to drive home.

Maybe you try to get your spouse’s or your child’s attention and they are watching a movie on the television, playing a video game, or reading a good book and you call to them and they don’t even respond. In fact, it seems as though they didn’t even hear you at all…or worse yet, they respond and then never ever even remember having the conversation!

It’s because they are in a hypnotic state – ultra focused on something other than what you are saying. In fact, they may be aware of something ‘out there’ but they have no idea what they are saying because they are so ultra focused on something else.

The truth is, we go in and out of periods of hypnosis all day long. Anytime you are engrossed in a good book, a great movie, visiting on the phone, typing up a blog, etc. you are ultra focused and in a state of self-hypnosis.

Consider the Pavlovian dog experiments. Pavlov rang the bell and fed the dogs; rang the bell and fed the dogs; rang the bell and fed the dogs…and conditioned the dogs that food was coming when the bell was rung.

Likewise, in HypnoBirthing we condition your body to relax.

Embrace the power of instinctive birth.

In the absence of fear and tension, or special medical circumstances, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labor.

Birthing muscles work in perfect harmony–as they were designed to–when your body is sufficiently relaxed and you trust birth. Learn how to achieve this kind of relaxation, free of the resistance that fear creates, and to use your natural birthing instincts for a calm, serene and comfortable birth.

When you have your baby with HypnoBirthing, you are not in a trance or asleep. What you experience is similar to the daydreaming, or focusing, that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or a movie or staring into a fire. In this calm state, your body’s endorphins replace the stress hormones that constrict and cause pain.

Awake throughout, you are aware of your body’s surges and your baby’s progress; conversant and in good spirits–totally relaxed, but fully in control. Because you have trained yourself to reach complete relaxation, you will determine the degree and the manner in which you feel the surges.

Experience birthing in an atmosphere of calm relaxation, free of the fear that prevents the muscles of your body from functioning as nature intended them to.  – us.hypnobirthing.com
